The name “university,” derived from the Latin phrase “universitas doctorum et studentium” (all doctors and students), today refers to institutions that educate and conduct research in a broad spectrum of fields and disciplines. Over the years, the missions and visions of universities have evolved, but they have always been, and continue to be, repositories of knowledge, places of scientific discovery, education, and the shaping of students’ attitudes. They are also institutions that set the tone for social coexistence and create patterns of interpersonal relationships. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the University of Gdańsk is proudly developing and cultivating these traditions, guided by established academic canons and the motto “in mari via tua.” The successful first half-century of the University offers optimistic prospects for further dynamic development and an increase in its rank and significance nationally and internationally.
