English poet, literary scholar, Shakespearean scholar, and outstanding expert on seventeenth-century French drama and the poetry of the French Symbolists. He taught at the University of Warwick, College de France. An honorary member of Christ’s College, Cambridge, he was knighted in 2014 for his services to Anglo-French intercultural dialogue. Member of the French Academy.
