Another difficulty lies in\u00a0the fact that a handbook on this subject must deal with a vast array\u00a0of sources and an exceptionally rich literature from all over\u00a0the world. In order to deal with these complexities, this book takes\u00a0the form of a comparative-legal study. It considers the history of the\u00a0state and of law in the most important European countries from\u00a0the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. It discusses the most\u00a0important changes and their consequences within the legal and\u00a0state systems of individual countries, but also more broadly on the\u00a0level of Europe and the world.
