Its uni\u0105ueness in Poland resides in thefact that the author does not\u00a0resthct himselfin his narrative to a presentation of judges&#8217; views, but concentrates on\u00a0court rulings. It, thus, brings Polish readers close to the essence of American jurisprudence. (&#8230;) Jerzy Zajad\u0142o convincing!y demonstrates the role ofideology, mostly that\u00a0of natur al law, in slave cases heard in court, introducing thereby the exceptionally\u00a0important concept of &#8220;judicial disobedience.&#8221; Further, the author shows how very\u00a0often the issue ofslavery was only marginal &#8211; fundamentally, it was a matter of the\u00a0interpretation ofthe Constitution (&#8230;). From this perspective, I see the main merit of\u00a0Professor Zajad\u0142o&#8217;s work in the fact that it is basically a book about the law&#8217;s\u00a0conservatism and about conflicts between the law and morality. Laws of natur\u0119,\u00a0customs, and interests all come into play, which, as a result, leads to a conflict\u00a0between positive law and the mora\u0142 re\u0105uirement of disobedience.
